EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Are you really prepared for an emergency?  This question needs to be answered by every resident of South Dakota.  The emergency can be a blizzard, tornado, or a flu pandemic.  What kind of preparedness does it take to survive an emergency situation?  A little thought now can greatly increase ones survival possibility.  Here are a few items to have on hand just in case.

Drinking water: enough for about a gallon per person in the home.  This is the minimum, with a young child, nursing mother, or sick resident increase this amount.

Food: at least a three day supply is recommended of non-perishable food.  Foods that require no refrigeration, no cooking or preparation, and no water are best.  Take into account any special dietary needs.  Include a hand operated can opener; remember there may not be electricity.  If a toddler or infant is present, account for formula and extra water, maybe include some dry or evaporated milk for them.  Snacks for children are a good idea as well.

Battery or crank powered radio: for listening to weather or special alerts from the emergency agencies.  A weather radio is also recommended with extra batteries.

Flashlights and extra batteries: especially with children present.  Kerosene lamps or candles can be helpful for just adults.

First Aid kit: plus any medications family members may require.  It is recommended to have at least one weeks supply at all times.

Moist towelettes, trash bags and ties: are needed to store waste and for personal sanitation use.

Dust masks, plastic sheeting and duct tape: to be used to reduce contaminated air and to create an isolated sheltered place.

Tools: for shutting off any utilities for the home.

Clothing: for every member of the family.  This should include layers of clothing for members to keep warm.  Sleeping bags and blankets are also recommended.

Just to make the time pass better magazines, games and puzzles are good.  A little planning now may make life easier if a disaster strikes your area.  For more information on this and other topics contact the Lincoln County Extension office at 764-2756.
