Plant
Vegetables Now for a Great Fall Harvest -- New!
It is very
easy to get wrapped up in tending the plants that are already
flourishing in the garden. After all, we have been working for quite
a while to get to this point! It is so much more glamorous to
harvest glistening zucchini and uncover pearly rows of sugary-sweet
corn than it is to plant seeds—again. But by taking the time to
plant in August a gardener can be harvesting all the way to the
frost and beyond. She can also be eating from the garden long
after the summer crops have frozen and died.

Managing Lawns for Greater Health Saves Time and Money -- New!
Each year lawns in
South Dakota are faced with environmental, disease and insect
pressures that reduce the health, vigor and beauty of the grass.
Often homeowners will work to treat the immediate problems that
arise, such as brown or dead patches, but will neglect to take steps
that ensure their lawns are capable of withstanding moderate levels
of stress. By cultivating a strong and healthy lawn, a homeowner can
save time and money on treatments for minor infestations of grubs,
he or she can save water during hot dry periods and can even prevent
many weeds from colonizing the lawn.

How to Build and Install a Rain Barrel
A rain barrel collects and stores
rainwater from your rooftop to use later for things like lawn and
garden watering. Water collected in a rain barrel would normally
flow through your downspout, onto a paved surface, and eventually
into a storm drain. Rain barrels help lower water costs, recharge
groundwater naturally, reduce water pollution, and are inexpensive
and easy to build and install.

A Cure for the
Spruce Blues
Sure, every gardener loves the striking
effect that blue can have in a landscape. As the rarest garden
shade, we covet blues that we can add to our garden pallet. Icy
peaks of delphinium or a cool cascade of Creeping Phlox are sure to
inspire long looks from passers-by and the gardener alike. Yet one
blue plant, Colorado blue spruce, often leads to more brown in the
landscape than vibrant blue.
