Community Gardens are
 Green and Growing!

Are you looking for a place to get your hands dirty and grow your own fresh produce?

The Sioux Falls Community Gardens might be the place for you.

Who can have a Community Garden?

Anyone who loves to garden or wants to learn is welcome in the Community Gardens.

Children and families spend time working together.

Singles and apartment dwellers find their own bit of real estate.

Former farmers get back into agricultural production.

No income requirements.  Garden scholarships are available if the cost is prohibitive.

What does it cost?

$15 pays for one 8-foot by 20-foot garden plot for a growing season.  It includes water and the initial tilling.

Where are the gardens?

Gardens are on public land in Falls Park on North Phillips Avenue, Leaders Park on North Leadale Avenue at East Sixth Street, and in Memorial Park at 26th Street and Discovery Avenue.  A limited number of plots on private land are also available on a first-come first-served basis. Two new locations will be available for the 2008 season: Center for Active Generations (behind the Active Data building, 2504 West 46th Street), and First Premier Bank (700 block of North Spring Avenue, directly west of the bank).

What is required?

Each garden plot must include at least one row of annual, blooming flowers.

Only annual plants (which die from the cold at the end of the season) are allowed.

Weeds must be controlled at all times in each plot and in the paths around the plot.

Gardeners must be willing to volunteer time toward improving the gardens.  Those who have physical difficulties contribute in different ways.  We always have projects such as improving the soil, building compost bins, promoting the garden sites, and answering questions or doing research about plants.

Applications for the 2009 Community Garden Season will be taken starting January 19, 2009, and updated Guidelines will be posted at that time.
