This was addressed in the December 2007 4-H Newsletter:  Livestock Exhibitor Changes for 2007-2008.  Be sure to review the changes if you exhibit market beef, sheep, swine or goats.

Achievement Day Help Needed

The 2008 Achievement Days are August 6 – 8 with Wednesday, August 6th as Interview Judging Day.

To insure that Achievement Days are a fun and educational experience for our 4-H youth, it requires the assistance of everyone.  Volunteers are needed to help with livestock committees, displaying the exhibits, assisting judges, plus assisting with some of the other summer activities.  Each year it takes approximately 175 volunteers to get the work done at Achievement Days.

Volunteers are primarily needed during the day; however, there are some evening jobs also.

Your 4-H club leader will be asking 4-H parents to volunteer some of their time during Achievement Days.  If you request a specific area to work in, the 4-H Leaders Executive Committee will do their best to meet that request.  If you can only work at certain times, indicate that also.  The more volunteers do, the less work for everyone.

Jobs are available to work with the display exhibits, livestock shows, securing booth sponsors and more.  Some are daytime while some are evening.  Please fill out the attached form and give it to your 4-H Leader or return it to the Extension Office by May 1st.  Thank you!

  4-H Insurance

One of the reasons that the 4-H Leaders have fund-raisers is to pay the accident insurance premium for 4-H members.  All 4-H members are required by the state to have 4-H accident insurance.  This insurance covers 4-H activities.  In Davison County, this is paid for by the Leaders Association.  This money comes from fund-raisers such as Achievement Day BBQ and lunch stands.  The profits from these and other projects also pay for other 4-H youth activities.  For this reason, 4-H Families are asked to promote and sell 4-H BBQ tickets for the Community BBQ at 4-H Achievement Days.

Demonstration/Illustrated Talk Updates

4-H members may use Power Point as a visual aid for their 4-H public presentation (demonstration, illustrated talks, public speaking and project ‘why’).  4-H members must indicate on the score sheet pre-registration form that they will be using Power Point.  All of these presentations, regardless of the area, will be scheduled in the Armory.  The 4-H member must bring their Power Point visuals on a 3.5 floppy disk or on a CD.  The State 4-H Office will furnish lap top computers and LCD projection.

4-H Gardening Exhibitors

Don’t forget to record the variety name of the vegetables you plant in your garden.  The variety name must be on the exhibit card at 4-H Achievement Days.  If you plant several varieties of a vegetable, you may need to do a drawing to help you remember which brand is which.

2008 4-H Achievement Day Dates

Mark August 6 – 8 on your calendars for the Davison County 4-H Achievement Days!  August 6th (Wednesday) morning will be the judging of 4-H Display Exhibits.

Davison County 4-H Shooting Sports

Wow, 13 of our 17 week Indoor program has come and gone. We have one week left to get qualifying scores shot and tests taken to get ready for the State Match in Ft. Pierre April 25-27th.

We want to Thank the Stand Up and Smile 4-H Club for operating the Concession Stand at our Winter Shoot Fest. We had nicer weather this year and had more shooters show up and participated. Out of town families suggested that we hold the shoot next year on the same weekend as Parkston BB Gun Match.  They felt they and other families would be willing to stay in Mitchell Saturday night and shoot at our event on Sunday.  We have been staying in contact with the Parkston group so we get the dates lined up.

The Shotgun Program will be starting again in May.  If you are interested, you need to stay in contact with the Instructors and watch the web page at www.dc4-hss.com.

Parents and adults that are interested in becoming shooting instructors, please let Mary Rhoades know so that she can put you on the contact list for the next training course.  We will be in need of more instructors for the 2009 year.

April is Citizenship Month

Good citizens do their share to help their families and communities.  They are good neighbors.  They obey rules & laws; cooperate with others and respect parents, teachers and others in authority.  Good citizens protect the environment.

Teaching a child to be a contributing member of a community can start with the family.  Being a good family citizen means that each person does their fair share and has a voice in certain family decisions.

Learning to obey laws and respect authority also begins at home. Conserve energy and obey laws—including wearing seat belts and requiring children to be in car seats or wearing seat belts.

Have your child and their friends make a set of rules to govern their playground or back yard.  Ask them what rules they think they should have and what should happen if someone violates the rules.  What good are rules if nothing happens to violators?

Exercising Citizenship Daily

Give your child a pat on the back or a word of praise and encouragement to recognize their good citizenship behavior at home.

1.     Wore a seatbelt in the car.

2.     Picked up after themselves

3.     Offered to help others with their chores.

4.     Kept their room neat and clean.

5.     Waited until others were through talking before having their say.

6.     Tried to help others feel better when they were feeling low.

7.     Stopped teasing family members before they got angry.

8.     Really tried to make our home a happy place.
